GIVING BACK

doing good by uncluttering your life

One of my rules for my closets is that if I haven’t used/worn the item for over a year, it has to go. This is especially true for apparel and accessories. Consider donating your unwanted items to a charity like Big Brothers Big Sisters, Vietnam Veterans of America, Purple Heart Veterans, the Salvation Army or any charity on Thredup.

Some will come to your home to collect the items after you call them and arrange for it. Thredup will conveniently send you pre-addressed and postage-paid bags which you can fill up with gently worn items and mail to them. They will send you a receipt for your tax return so you can claim the donation.

Select the charity that speaks to you and which you would be happy to support. Check online for other charities you may prefer. The result is that they will be grateful for your donation, you did something you can feel good about, and your clutter is gone. A win-win situation.

Donations to charities can reduce your income tax. Make a list of the items you want to donate with the original purchase date and purchase price, which you will need for the charitable donation tax form.
